A fascinating visit to the Veolia Energy Recovery Facility in Shrewsbury on 17th April where we saw what happens to the rubbish that we all put into our red top bins (an average of 1 tonne per household per annum apparently!). Most of us assumed that some if not all of this goes to land fill but in fact all the waste collected in Shropshire which is unsuitable for recycling goes into an enormous furnace the heat from which is used to generate electricity sufficient to power 10.000 homes. All that remains at the end of the process is residual metal and ash – the metal is extracted for recycling and the ash is used in road construction. Impressive or what! The visit was followed by a very pleasant lunch at the Battlefied restaurant
