Silver over the Bridge
The bridge from which the village of Ironbridge takes its name was completed in 1779 and opened to traffic in 1781. The bridge closed to vehicles in 1934 but remained open as a toll bridge for pedestrians who were, until 1950, still required to pay a toll.
'The Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions club was formed 1979 and one of the club's earliest fundraising ideas was to invite visitors to the bridge to lay coins on a strip of sticky tape. The aim was to get a line of coins right across the bridge. Thus was born our “Silver over the Bridge” or “SOB” programme which continues to this day.
We now run around 8 SOB events each year. Each is for a different local charity or cause, and we invite those involved with the cause to join us on the bridge for the day. We have rarely made the complete crossing, but Abraham Darby’s iron bridge has enabled us to provide support for very many good causes over the past 45 years.
Can we help you?
If youknow of, or involved with, a local charity or group in need of funds for a particular purpose, do please let us know. We can't promise to include them in our next SOB season but we do promise to consider all applications carefully. Just jot down brief details on our contact form (see main menu above) and we will be in touch
